Travertine

Hydrogenous sedimentary rock

This rock sample consists of thinly bedded layers of calcium carbonate that was deposited by flowing groundwater on the side of a fissure or cavernous fissure. The top of the sample is covered with tufa, another variety of calcium carbonate deposited by springwater. Travertine is a variety of freshwater limestone. Speleothems in caverns are formed from travertine. This sample is from talus in an area underlain by marble bedrock in the Gavilan Mountains, San Benito County, CA.
